Are you looking for a way to improve your skin’s texture and overall appearance? At Dr Queenie Chan’s clinic, our chemical peel treatments are designed to address a variety of skin concerns, from uneven skin tone to acne scars, by gently exfoliating the skin and encouraging natural renewal. Using carefully selected peel solutions, this treatment helps to refine and refresh the skin, reducing signs of sun damage, fine lines and pigmentation while promoting a clearer, smoother complexion.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing treatment that removes dead skin cells from the surface, revealing a fresher, more radiant layer underneath. The treatment involves applying a chemical solution to the skin, which works to exfoliate and stimulate cell turnover. Depending on the strength of the peel, it can target concerns such as sun exposure, fine lines, dullness and blemishes.

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

Chemical peels can be applied to various areas of the face and body to improve skin texture and tone:

  • Face – Helps reduce fine lines, skin wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, melasma, active acne and some acne scars.
  • Neck & Décolletage – Targets sun damage, uneven tone or texture; and mild laxity.
  • Hands – Improves sun exposure-related damage and enhances texture.
  • Body – Can be used on areas such as the back, arms and legs to refine the skin.

What Conditions Can a Chemical Peel Treat?

A chemical peel can help with various skin concerns, including:

  • Uneven skin tone and sun damage
  • Active acne, some acne scars and blemishes
  • Fine lines and mild wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores and peeling skin

What Are the Benefits of a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels offer a non-invasive way to rejuvenate the skin, improving clarity and smoothness over time. Key benefits include:

  • Stimulates cell turnover, inducing new collagen production and promoting a brighter complexion
  • Helps reduce pigmentation, sun exposure damage and acne scars (ice pick and boxcar scars)
  • Improves skin texture, making it smoother and more refined
  • Minimises fine lines, enhancing skin smoothness and overall texture
  • Improves skin hydration especially for individuals with red skin and rosacea
  • Customisable for different skin types and concerns
  • Minimal downtime with certain light and medium peels

Am I a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Most individuals seeking to improve their skin’s overall appearance can benefit from a chemical peel. The treatment is suited for those dealing with concerns such as sun damage, pigmentation, or acne scars. However, those with darker skin tones may require a tailored approach to minimise the risk of pigmentation changes. If you have deep wrinkle lines or significant loose skin, other modalities such as surgery may be more appropriate for you. A consultation will determine the appropriate chemical peel for your skin.

How Does a Chemical Peel Work?

During the treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, working to break down dead skin cells and stimulate renewal. Depending on the depth of the peel, different acids may be used:

  • Superficial peels – Light exfoliation using retinoic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid to refresh the skin with minimal downtime.
  • Medium peels – Medium strength TCA penetrates deeper into the skin, helping with more noticeable pigmentation and textural issues.
  • Deep peels – Jessner TCA or phenol-croton oil target deep dermal layers and address more significant concerns, such as deep wrinkles and acne scars and require a longer recovery period. This is recommended to small targeted areas of the face. If phenol is used over larger surface areas, cardiac monitoring is required.

Consultation

A consultation is the first step in determining the appropriate chemical peel for your skin. We will assess your skin concerns, history of sun exposure and overall skin condition to create a tailored plan. A chemical peel treatment can often be combined with laser resurfacing therapy to optimise results and reduce down-time.

Preparation

Sun screen is to be applied regularly in the weeks leading up to the procedure. If you have a history of cold sores, we will prescribe you an anti-viral medication to prevent post-procedure infections. For medium to deep peels, topical numbing cream is applied 1 hour before the procedure.

Procedure

The skin is degreased and cleansed and the selected peel solution is applied. Depending on the type of peel, you may feel a mild tingling or warmth. If a medium or deep peel is employed, analgesia and a mild sedative will be given before the procedure commences.

The treatment typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. A topical anti-oxidant serum and retinol cream is recommended after the procedure to prevent UV damage and maintain your result.

Results

As the skin renews itself, improvements in skin texture and tone become more noticeable over the following weeks. Lighter peels provide a subtle glow, while deeper peels offer more dramatic rejuvenation.

Recovery

After a chemical peel, itching, redness, warmth, hypersensitivity, dryness, or peeling skin may occur as the skin renews itself. Swelling can also occur with deeper peels. Recovery time depends on the depth of the peel, with light and medium peels healing within a few days, while deeper treatments take longer (weeks). Avoid direct sun exposure and use sun protection regardless of your level of sun exposure to protect your results.

Possible Risks or Side Effects

While chemical peels are generally well-tolerated, some temporary side effects can occur:

  • Mild redness, warmth, dryness, or peeling skin
  • Localised swelling
  • Temporary sensitivity to sun exposure
  • In rare cases, pigmentation changes (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) especially in individuals with a darker skin tone

How Much Does a Chemical Peel Cost?

The cost of a chemical peel varies depending on the type of peel used, the treatment area and the number of sessions required. A personalised quote will be provided during your consultation.

FAQs

There are different types of chemical peels, ranging from mild exfoliation to deeper resurfacing. A consultation will determine whether a light chemical peel, medium chemical peel, or deep chemical peel is best suited to your skin concerns and goals.

A superficial chemical peel gently exfoliates the outer layer of skin, targeting mild texture concerns with little to no downtime. Medium-depth chemical peels penetrate deeper, addressing pigmentation, fine lines and acne scars, with a slightly longer recovery period.

Glycolic acid peels are a popular choice for many skin types as they help to improve texture and tone. However, individuals with sensitive or darker skin may need a tailored approach to avoid irritation or pigmentation changes.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are naturally derived exfoliating agents used in many peels, including glycolic acid peels. They help remove dead skin cells, promote renewal and improve overall skin brightness.

A chemical peel performed at our clinic involves cleansing the skin before applying a tailored chemical solution. The peel is left on for a specific time before being neutralised or removed, allowing the skin to begin its renewal process. For medium to deep peels, local anaesthetic cream is typically applied 1 hour before the procedure for comfort.
